Haemodialysis is a process where blood is cleaned using a dialysis machine with a filter and an artificial kidney (haemodialyser). A fistula, graft, or catheter may be used during a minor surgery to gain access to the blood and get blood into the dialyser. Dialysate is used to clean the blood before it is taken from the patient's body and cycled through a fluid circuit (outside the body). In addition to helping electrolytes and minerals reach the proper concentration in the body, dialysis fluid helps eliminate undesired waste products from the blood. Additionally, the device tracks blood flow and will occasionally sound an alarm if something needs to be checked. It is performed three times per week and can take three to four hours. It can be carried out at home or at a hospital. Dialysis sessions may take place four to seven times per week with shorter hours if a patient chooses to get treatment at home.
